Road works

Options
Not the usual rant about blocking off lanes etc. but rather lack of notification to residents of forthcoming works.

Woke up this morning at 8.30am to a loud rythmic thumping sound on my road. Continued to 1pm.

Rang the council and they were testing the road surface with a view to replacing (its currently concrete) so they were going up and down the road with large machinery banging it.

My OH is a shift worker and came home at 8am this morning and has to go be back in work by 7pm tonight. He works a min 12 hour shift during which time he's driving etc (nicking people!). Now he will only have about 4 hours sleep this afternoon.:(

I did ask the council if could notify residents of particularly noisy work so shift workers could make other arrangements to get a good night sleep. They did say they would mention to supervisor - so nothing happening there then:p

I think it would be a good idea for the Council to keep a register of shift workers so that all utility companies etc have to refer to it before commencing street works. A short letter outlining the planned work would be greatly appreciated I am sure by all those who need to sleep during the day.

Sometimes all they put up is a yellow paper notices on a few lampposts. If I hadn't read about forthcoming works outside my house then we would have been dug in, as they were digging up the road.
I really dislike council builders as they are so rude!

Our access is a single track road, we reported some horrendous potholes in Feb, nothing happened, sent another letter in a few weeks ago. A couple of days later I was eating my cornflakes when I noticed a large lorry being unloaded in front of my parking area. I ran out to see what was happening as I needed to get the car out and it was council workmen coming to sort out the potholes. They were really annoyed when I asked them to move the lorry so I could get my car out, said they would only take a couple of hours to do the job, tell that to the customer I'm supposed to be meeting in 40 mins! There are several more houses lower down and they weren't going to check if they wanted to get out before digging up the only access road, they expected me to run round them all!

I forgot to add to my OP that there were 3 workmen operating machine and 7 :eek:men in florescent jackets watching. I was told they were all engineers supervising the work to see if the road needed replacing. Is this a record?
