another web browser to try-Opera

try https://www.opera.com/products/desktop/ for its browser. In some ways it's better than firefox & it works with my ING Direct bank account. it's more regularly improved than the others & offers many shortcuts.

You are lucky it worked. To offer a counter-opinion I think Opera is the least compatible of any of the browsers available and borders on unusable. Stay well clear.

For maximum compatibility on the PC I use Firefox with IE Tab for the rare occasions something won't load.

I use FireFox with ie lite and Opera for a change, it's now almost unheard of to find a site that doesn't work with Firefox.
There are several sites that don't like Opera, e.g Freecycle
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Another vote for Opera - there are very few sites that I vist that do not work with it.

It comes with a lot of good features, some which are now present in FF via add ons like speed dial
  • I used to use Opera and liked it very much, but I got frustrated with the number of sites which are not compatible so switched back to IE when version 7 was realeased.

Opera is the most secure Web browser available for both Mac and PC and is W3C Web Standards compliant. That's what it says on their site under 'Stable and Secure' what it doesn't tell you is it adheres strictly to the standards and 'sloppy' html doesn't render well in Opera, whilst in Internet Explorer any old virus can slip in as it accepts just about anything.

All those people experiencing problems with banking sites, tesco.com etc are probably infected with god knows what. Myself on the other hand I don't experience any of that, Opera browser works well with all of those sites. Including tesco.com which has had an update which firefox once again can't handle.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Opera browser: Tools > Quick preferences > Edit Site Preferences > Network

From there you can choose how your browser is recognised.

Slightly more simple is F12 > Edit Site Preferences > Network

Nice post Donnie, forgot about that tip.

Opera is great. The only reason I don't use it, is I'm still waiting for a browser sync option (I think it's due in 9.5), and it doesn't look quite right using Gnome.

  • Opera browser is a great piece of software. It is small, quick & I get very few web pages that don't display, but then i just change the mode for that page.
Opera were the 1st to have tabbed browsing, auto log in with 'wand' , speed dial & it includes a basic looking but powerful e-mail client that is imo better than 'windows mail'
I think opera has earnt the respect of a lot of geeks as it well written, low on bugs, 1/2 the size of other browsers but as functional out of the box, fast & secure.

I downloaded a win version of safari. what a disaster that is, i can not believe apple would release it even as a beta.

off by one browser http://offbyone.com/offbyone/ is also great for what it is - very basic, but run off a pen drive it is most secure as nothing is written to the hdd so great when using another pc or public pc (library) to access mail or banking

I use Foreforx as my primary browser but also use Opera a lot as well. It is an excellent browser but I just prefer Firefox, probably because I'm so used to it and I like a lot of the extensions.

I have to agree abotu Safari though, I tried that and hated it.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
