Venice

Options
I will be going to Italy with my husband in June. He has family who live in Battaglia so we will be spending a few days with them but we would like to visit Venice for a couple of days just the two of us to celebrate our anniversary.

We have looked at hotels in Venice but we believe they are too expensive. Can anyone advise anywherethat we can stay and travel easily (and preferbaly cheaply) to Venice? I'd also like ideas of transport available and how much it is likely to cost.

I've stayed in Lido di Jesolo as a package holiday and have travelled with the tour operator to Venice but we had to get a coach and then catch a waterbus though I don't remember from where. I know that I can catch a train from Padova to Venice but am not sure how frequently these trains run and when they run until. Ideally we want to go to Venice in the morning and return late as I love Venice at night.

I realise I'm asking a lot of questions but any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried searching the internet but I'm just getting more confused.

A couple of years ago we flew (cheaply via Ryanair) to Treviso and stayed at a wonderful hotel called the Carletto.

We actually booked the hotel through the Ryanair portal and it came out very reasonable, cost wise. The hotel itself was wonderful, very clean and comfortable.
Trains from Treviso to Venice are frequent, cheap... Trviso itself is a charming little town.

By staying outside Venice you will be missing the charm.....try Hotel Galleria(close to the Rialto bridge)or Hotel Riva (close to St Marks). If you look on slowtravel.com under the venice hotel section you will find lost of reviews for good value B&B.
  • Hi

Me and my boyfriend are going in August and i have been searching for a hotel for ages. Yes they are indeed SOOOO expensive! We decided that we wasnt going to get much for anything under £100 a night.

On trip advisor.com - this hotel : Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo seems to be really good value for its price. It is rated by travellers reviews as no.2 out of all its venice hotels listed down to perfect location, price and staff. We emailed this hotel and booked and the comuincation was perfect and all the reviews suggests that we have definitely made the correct choice.
You can choose from a canal view (160euro per night) or normal room (140euro).
    Hope this may help :)

    Here is the link -

    Description
Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo is just a stroll from Rialto Bridge, behind the beautiful San Stae Church in an extremely characteristic and tranquil area of Venice which is off the conventional tourist track, but yet in the heart of the city

My OH booked us the Hotel Villa Marbapa in the Lido area ,which is the piece of land next to the main venice "island".He was told in was "in the centre" mm,not strictly, you have to take a boat ride 20 mins maybe, but it was about £100 a night, about 130 euros on hotels comparison. (see it on venere also i think)Very nice hotel.wonder if trenitalia are the train company?
  • Wife and I went to Venice in March last year for our wedding aniversary and loved it. We flew with Easy Jet from Gatwick (no help to you!!) Know what you mean about the prices and finding somewhere to stay. We found a little hotel 2 minutes from St Marks Square!!!! Great location. Allright the rooms were a bit small but we were out all day and not taking to much notice at night!! The Hotels name is "Lisbona". Website address from thier headed paper http://www.hotellisbona.com We found it on Trip Advisor as well. If you need any more info come back to me. One of the best things we found was just walking, getting lost and having coffee and cake before finding the way back.
    Nice to save.
  • Hi,

Yup afraid the hotels can be a bit expensive in Summer (not so in Winter though for reference for future trips!).

As always I'll recommend the Al Campaniel. It's not too expensive, the owner Marco is a lovely chap, and it's in a great location just a minutes walk from the San Trovaso vaporetto (water bus) stop, and with plenty of bars and restaurants just a short walk away.

    Here's the link > http://alcampaniel.tripod.com/

As for this B&B, I've not stayed there but I've had it recommended > http://www.bedandbreakfastalteatro.com/index_ing.htm

Only other hotel I have experience of in Venice is the Ai Mori D'Oriente, but it can be quite pricey during the peak months. Here's the link anyway > http://www.morihotel.com Well worth it though if you fancy splashing out :D

As for travelling in from Padova, there's plenty of trains. At least one an hour, more likely more. Plus they run from early until fairly late. The Trenitalia website is very good and easy to use if you want to work out journey times etc > http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

Cost wise, I recall it being about 7 or 8 Euros for a return, but that was 2 years ago. Oh and Padova is beautiful, well worth a visit particularly for the market on Saturdays, lots of bargains particularly footwear

Treviso is somewhere else to consider, it's about 30mins by train with around one service an hour, again you can check on the Trenitalia website. Plus Treviso is very attractive, and has the Saturday market too!
