I just dug out an old magnetic base CB antenna, and read on the internet that since 2006 you no longer need a license for CB radios.

Do people still use these things? Any thing of interest go on? I've never used a CB radio myself.

Could you be prosecuted under the mobile phone laws for holding and speaking into the microphone while driving?

yes loads of lorry drivers still use CBs ,but they have a voice activated mic,

they can be handy in areas of no mobile reception,

I heard somewhere that an age concern type of place have supplied loads of old folk with CBs so they can keep in touch and have a general gossip all for free

Most of the CB'ers I knew went legal in the early 80's with a proper Ham licence but really mobile phones have taken over where CB's came in which was keeping in touch on the move.

Well some lorries use it still, especially buddy divers who are going to the same place. Also taxi drivers use it. There are also a very few nightowls out there who still like to while away the hours from their homes.

I know you used to need a licence, but I didn't know it had now been cancelled (about time it was IMO). No they are not illegal under the new Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regultions

Gives an exemption to "two-way radios".

Hardly any truckers use CB radio any more. They've all moved onto Ham stuff as you can use more powerful sets legally and get better range as well as not having to suffer being keyed over by muppets.
