Closing cards with outstanding balance

Options
Hello to you all,

I am currently paying off 4 credit cards at the moment and am resisting the temptation to spend on them until the balances are paid in full. I am doing very well so far having lasted more than 6 months without spending on any of them but I have a lot of things coming up soon like holidays, birthdays etc and am worried temptation may creep in to use my cards.

Is it possible to contact your credit card company and ask them to cancel the card so no money can be spent on the card until I have the balance paid in full?

I would like to do this but I am worried about 2 things 1) this may have an adverse effect on my credit history if I do this and 2) doing this may lead to a lot of suspicious questions from the companies asking why am I doing this, am I in financial difficulty (which I am not) etc.

The 4 companies involved are Citibank, Bank of Ireland, HSBC and Barclaycard.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
