    At the moment nothing.

What you need to do is hand your P45 to your new employer or fill in a P46. If you do this quickly enough you may just manage to get your code altered for next month and you rebate, if due, will be calculated automatically.

If not you will have to wait until after April 6th and then apply for a rebate. You would need your P60 at that point.

What code were you on and why do you think you will be due a refund? Were you working before this new job?

I am due to start a new job at the end of March but I have been self-employed for years. I do not have a P45 so wondered what I would do in this instance.

Hi kazd, in your case, although you have no P45 because you're starting your job in the last few days of the financial year, I suspect they wouldn't put you on emergency tax, just on the basic single person's allowance code. Why not just ring the local tax office - their number's in the phone book or, if you prefer, you can look them up online.
    Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
Debt free success date: 14.8.2006 :j
  • Emergency tax is the basic persons allowance, AKA 522L Wk1/M1 (or 543L for 2008/09)

Kazd in your case you will need to complete a form P46 to indicate this is your only or main income and sign the declaration. your employer will then operate the appropriate coding and send the form to HMRC who will asses your circumstances and issue a revised coding to the employer, if needed.

You mentioned that your starting at the end of March but im assuming here that your first payment will be after 6th April, if so your coding should be 543L

    Hope this helps

BR is not the emergency tax code. BR means Basic Rate and everything is taxed at 22%. You have not been given any tax-free allowances. They will have put you on this code as you gave no P45 and have not completed a P46.

You will be liable for tax if you earn over £5225 in this tax year. You will prpbably be due a tax refund as you haven't been working in this tax year but other than that you will pay tax.

You need to ask your employer for a P46 or download it from here, fill it in and hand it in to your employer.

Looks to me as if you are paid every four weeks is that correct?

Did you fill in a P46 when you started, if so which part did you tick A B or C ?
Link to P46 to see what it looks like

You are at present on a BR code which is used when a P46 has not been filled in or is filled in as having another job or pension.
  • i am paid 4 weekly, i didnt fill in a P46 so i will sort it out, thanx for the links.
i earn less than £5225 so i guess i wont be paying tax.
    thanx for your help.

So was your first pay for more than 4 weeks?

If not that would suggest you earn more than £5225.
