Credit card for under 18's??

Options
help please

My daughter needs a credit card due to the amount of travelling she does. It will not be used for obtaining cash as she has a debit card for this. There is no issue about funds as me, (poor old dad), will be paying the bill each month. have found that some countrys she is in will not accept payment by debit card, only credit card.

She will either need a card in her own name or an account with me as the main card holder and her as a secondary card holder.

I have many accounts with HSBC and i have yet to get confirmation that she can have one with them although i have spoke with customer servises today and they say to speak to my branch tomorrow as i may be able to get an 'In trust fund' account. I already have full control of all her accounts by signing a consent form although cant remember what it was called. HSBC telephone banking also said that the FSA does not allow under 18's to use a credit card!.

My wife is with RBS and they say she probably could get set up as a named card holder on one of her accounts.

Can anyone tell me if HSBC could offer her a credit card or if not then why would RBS alllow her to have one? I really would prefer to have this via HSBC as it will keep all my internet banking the same

Do any other banks offer this ?

thanks

AFAIK you have to be 18 in order to get a credit card account in your own name. Some companies will allow her to be an extra/secondary card holder of 1 of your accounts, Capital One being one of them.

  • Try a VISA Debit card as issued by Lloyds, Barclays and Halifax; these generally get processed through the Visa system and are therefore accepted more or less everywhere.

Barclays gave a full Visa Debit to my brother with his BarclayPlus account; he was aged 15 at the time, so give them a shot.

There are also some prepaid credit cards out there where you can "pre load" the cash for her onto the card - is this an option ?
  • I hope you don't think this too personal a question, but where is your daughter going where her current cards won't be accepted? Which conutries? Sometimes travelers cheques are better than credit cards.

I used to just use a card in my mum's name with my signature. Not strictly allowed, but it never got questioned!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I had an AMEX card under my mums account when i was under 18, im pretty sure she just fibbed about my age.... ;)

This will only be used to pay hotel bills. sports related and she has to travel a lot and probably spends about 10 weeks a year in hotels all across the world and it is just not practical for her to carry cash or chqs. her maestro card has recently been rejected as amethod of payment in south america at 2 hotels. Had to go to cash point and get cash to pay!!!!

Capital One have also said no so i am still looking for a solution to this.

Prepaid cards are run by MasterCard and so have a worldwide acceptance!
