Cheap woolies laptops

Options
Looking at buying two of these laptops http://www.woolworths.co.uk/wwstore/product.jhtml?op=details&product=50457714&op=details

Very small office and they will pretty much be used as word processers, quick question, looking for a quick answer. Will I be able to network them and will I be able to use the existing cables which network our two current pc's?

  • Yes, you can add them to a network quite easily - comes with a built-in ethernet port.

One word of advice though - you'll get a better laptop for £400 elsewhere - even PC World are likely to have something in that range that would be better.

The reason I say that is because things like the CD drive are external - so you're really losing out on the reason behind a laptop here, you'll have to carry around a bag of bits with it too!

As chillpill says yes you can but I agree with chillpill about the external cd, how annoying that would be and more prone to damage!
Just to point out the specs say the laptop has only got a CDRW and DVD reader, not a DVD-RW, misleading key features there so be careful when looking at that one and haven't celerons got at most 1MB cache? Still an ok laptop for the price.

I would check out Ebuyer if you haven't already, couple of nice Acer and Toshiba laptops there.

The 'key features' state it as a DVD-R, which can only be assumed as a writer unless they are trying to be sneaky with their marketing. But you're correct, the spec states DVD Combo - worth checking for clarification on that.

Just my opinion but if you want to use them for mainly word processing, I wouldn't recommend a laptop. I find a laptop very difficulty for touch-typing because of the position of your hands in relation to the "keyboard".

    Thanks for the replies.

Billieboy, don't think we know what touch typing is, I can almost use two fingers and I'm sure I've seen my mate use his nose in the past :)

I would but I would recommend a seperate usb keyboard for intensive word processing which saves being hunched over the laptop keyboard.

Don't know if it's any help, but I saw them yesterday in our local Woolies for £399.
