Hi,
I posted a few days ago about a work situation I had gotten myself into.
I currently work 3 days a week and love the job but not the travelling, 3 hrs a day on public transport.
I got offered a new job same company, same money, however less hours 2.5 days a week. But no travelling, well only into the town centre about an hour a day.
Well when I applied for it my OH said go for it we can afford it. It means dropping my contribution towards the house hold bills £150 per month. I would still pay the childcare costs £200 a month and half the food money!! As well as the other bills.
Well when I got the job I decided to try and negotiate for a refund of a course and extra pay to stay in my current job but my current boss said no, I had no commitment to my job etc. I got pregnant just after I started!!! But thats just life. No commitment I don;'t know anyone else in my job who takes calls and deals with their sites on there non working day, since I cut my hours I have not had a week when I have not been contacted on my non working days.
Anyway my OH has now decided he can't manage with out the £150 a month and that I should stay in this job.   My question now is how?
I have verbally accepted the new job and verbally told my boss I am going. So what do I do now?
What do I say to my current boss? I think as I haven't handed in my notice that she can;t force me to go but I no she doesn't want me. So what do I say etc..

There is no substitute for being happy in your job. Its not worth the extra 150 quid a month to be miserable. You will probably find that as your hours come down your expenditure will too. You'll have more time to buget and prepare HM meals etc... you can easily cut back to save 150 quid a month. What is your food bill currently? On a mission0

What are the travel costs of old job - that would be quite a bit compared to a local job? As laudora says there is no compensation for being happy in your job...is there are leeway for overtime or upping your hours or getting work elsewhere for a few hours?Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Your time has a value too-three hours a day on public transport sounds like somethig guaranteed to get your stress levels through the roof. Why not do your SOA for us so we can see if there are any more savings to be made, and, as lauradora asks, your food bill could be a good place to start

Be firm with your OH and stick with your decision-you made it originally knowing it would be better for you, so now you just have to rework the numbers to prove it to him too! x0 -
Don't want to state the obvious but your husband has left this a little too late in my opinion. He waited until you had done the interview, got the job offer and told your boss before he decided he couldn't afford the £150??? What has changed since he said it was fine for you to go ahead with the new job and that he could afford the £150?
Is there any way you could take the new job and then try and make up the £150 another way that might be less stressful i.e a bar job close to home possibly?
Good luck I hope it is easily resolved.0 -
Thanks for my replies,
Here's my SOA
Income
£750 (ish) current salary New Salary Approx £628
£97 Child tax credit (will go down in June to £47)
Total £847
Outgoings
£150 towards the house
£185 loan
£200 Childcare
£100 my half of the food
£60 Sky
£25 Mobile
£80 Me (travel, my clothes, anything needed for DS
£10 DS savings
Total £810
On my current salary leaves £37 a month. On my new salary I would be in negative by £85 with the increased child tax credit. When this is lowered i would be £125 negative.
Unfortunately there is no way I could cut the food budget we put in £100 each but normally go over this. My DS is on formula £8 a pot, so about £60 a month just on that, then there is the nappies other baby food etc.
Sky is my TV broadband and phone.
Any help would be gratefully recieved0 -
Have you worked out how much childcare and travelling costs you would save by working the new job?0
-
I wouldn't save anything childcare wise as my DS only goes for 2 days a week, I might be able to knock an hour off each day but that would only save me a total of £20 a month.
Bus fare wouldn't change I would still have to get a daily or weekly ticket so it would still come out at £10 a week.
The other £10 a week is meant to be so i can go to baby activities, have my hair done etc. I haven't had a hair cut since December, I haven't had anything waxed either!!
Its so depressing I was better of on SMP. I am so tempted to just get pregnant again then I know I would have extra money for a while. I managed to pay off £2000 in debt while I was off with DS.0 -
Any help please?0

I've got nothing useful to say exxcept I think you're doing really well, and probably you're better off at the new place - especially since you've got a lil one now!CC1: [strike]1,500[/strike] CC2:[strike]£830[/strike] Vanquis [strike]£1500[/strike] £2000 left
S.Elec: [strike]£258[/strike] £ 0
CT [strike]1734.52[/strike] £ 0
Ebay £ 10.00 /MystShop £ 17.00/Quidco £ 0 so far!0 -
in the time you're at home on your non-working days you could be doing a little bit extra to earn some more, by surveys, slice the pie etc. and that extra hour a day in reduced travelling will make you feel SOOOO happy.
my friend who is off work on SMP at the moment has been making cards and craft stuff, she could potentially sell it on car boots/craft fairs for a little extra. could you do anything like this?0
