How far do you go?

Hello all.

As the title says, how far with regard to what do you do to raise funds to pay off your debts.

Since I found myself in the present situation, I've had a lot of advice from a lot of folk but some contradicts others. Some say sell as much as you can, others say don't as it helps mentally. I want to get my cc's paid as quickly as I can and the Snowball calculator tells me that by paying £400.00 pm, I'll be paid by early 2010. Thinking ahead, the more £400.00's I can raise, the sooner I'm free of the debt. Is it worth trying to sell literally everything I can or will that be bad from a phsycological point of view? I had thought about selling the motorhome which would hopefully clear all my debts but then I'd have nowhere to live so I'd have to borrow to buy a caravan, a car, etc, etc and end up back in debt again. I've got all my own diving kit but as my regular dive buddy, ie: the wife, is leaving me, I don't foresee many, if any, opportunities to dive in the near future so the sale of all that would raise some funds.

What did people who've cleared their debts do to help pay? I'm not sure I can get a second job but I may be able to get some more hours at work so that will help.

THanks all.

Martyn.

Regarding the dive equipment honestly I'd keep it... It's something you enjoy and you can't give up EVERYTHING :) - besides going diving might get you out meeting new people... ;)
What level are you qualified to? Could you teach? ie are you a qualified PADI instructor?
Caravan... If selling this could clear your debt then... Have you thought about looking for another similar job to the one you've been doing with your wife? Somewhere that might offer a small dwelling as part of the job and would let you bring the rescue dogs with you? If you could find something similar then to me it would be a no brainer! Sell the caravan and start fresh!

  • Hi Martyn :j

A pm is on its way, long time no speak ;)
  • Morning!
Firstly sorry that you are in the process of splitting up. Its a tough time but try & "reframe" it & see it a way if new beginnings and a fresh start - hard at times I know!
I'm going to also contradict what has been said I'm affraid! The diving gear is a tough one I know as I had exacty the same dilemma when I began my journey. I knew I wouldnt be able to afford to go so sold my kit and it was actually quite liberating in a representative way IYKWIM!! Old life gone, new life starts! I figure I can always buy again in the future if I want to but can always hire which saves lugging it accross the world!
I'm unsure where the ref to rescue dogs came from tine?!
Cant quite get the caravan bit - do you live in a caravan at the moment & is this a long ter plan? If so then you need to keep it. If its a luxury and would wipe the debt then sell it & get an old banger for now & start again!
Re work if you can get more hours do and what about a bar job a couple of nights a week to be out of the house & meeting new people while also earning a bit more?
Personally I sold as much stuff as I could and it was liberating - so much stuff I didt need (& still room for more car boots when the weather improves!), books on green metropolis etc...my flat is much less cluttered & feels different - calmer!
Hope that helps? Keep us posted & good luck with your new life!

    Hi Martyn,
I agree with Tine - see if you can get a job at a similar pay with accomodation then sell the motorhome. Personally I think it depends on personality which is the best approach as I think both arguements are valid. I have sold lots of stuff but it's mainly excess stuff as I need to keep my home and my car. I reckon I can live without unwatched dvds though. Good luck whatever you decide. x
