Cards are our property? Cancellling Cards

I have 2 cards I want to cancel, MBNA and Barclaycard. Not wanting a debate or any offers I was simply going to write to both companies.

However when trawling the MBNA small print I note it says 'cards and cheques are our property'. Well I've always shredded the cheques they've sent so thats rather tough but does that mean I shouldn't do what I normally do with old cards e.g. cut them up?

I was going to simply write, cancel the cards and inform them I have destroyed them. I don't want to return them in the post as they are currently active cards and god only knows where they would end up.

Mind you the MBNA small print also says 'you can cancel this agreement within 5 days' and doesn't mention the ability to cancel it at any time after that point. :rotfl:

That'll teach me to read small print looking for an address.
I live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.

The only reason the cards are down as the property of the CC companies is (presumably) so they can ask for them back if need be.

Whenever I've cancelled an account, I've just been asked over the phone to destroy the card. They've never asked for it back. Neither would I send it back (for security).

Although I'm sure there's no need to, if you're cancelling via post, you could send back half the card with the letter of cancellation. This would prove to them you've destroyed the card, and wouldn't be of use to anyone else if the post was intercepted. Personally I wouldn't bother, but I've sure there's no harm doing that.

Doh my brain. I thought there must be a logical reason.

I'll just do what I was going to - write and cut them up.

Why don't you save yourself a stamp and phone MBNA. It is a free phone 0800 number. It may take a month or two to finally close it. They will give you instructions.
I was requested to send my Capital One circle card back, cut in half, when I closed the account.
