TRV on Towel Rail?

Good evening.......

I just had a Corgi man tell me that i must put TRV's on both my towel rails.

This is a new one on me and does not agree with the FAQ here

http://www.diyfaq.org.uk/plumbing/plumbingpage2.html#thermostats

which of course may well be out of date.

So can one of the heating engineers here enlighten me, is this the case today or am i being ill informed ?

I am a bit suspicious given that i also "need" a powerflush
Hmmmmmmm

at least i think he meant the system not me personally:eek:

Your Corgi man is a registered gas fitter if he really is a Corgi man, not a plumber.

As with many tradesman of his type, he is just trying to fleece you out of your hard earned.

how much was he wanting to charge you to fit two £5 TRVs ?

If you have a boiler with an in built by-pass, then you can put trv's on both rails.

If you have had a by-pass incorporating a gate valve fitted before the first radiator, again, you can put trv's on both.

If you don't have either of the by-passes, then leave one of the trv's off.

You're now supposed to have a room stat as well as trv's, but leave the trv off the room with the room stat obviously !.

Well now !.....that's clear as mud  :rotfl:

He is registered, i checked on the corgi site and he was suggsting that I fit the TRV's to the 2 towel rails.

Its the power flush thing that really got me, slap a pump on the system, leave it running for a few hours, thanks very much that will be x hundered quid.

I am sure some people need it but it does seem like a good
way of upping the bill or i could just be a cynic :D

    Anyway i found this document

    http://www.centralheating.co.uk/index/fuseaction/site.viewFile/id/6696

which states the TRV's need to be in the sleeping areas only.

In fact i recently fitted them to all rooms except the dining room (which has a wall stat) and the 2 towel rails which as i mentioned did not even occur to me. :(

    Hi Rob,

I get the bypass thing, took a while for me to get my head around that one :D

But he was suggesting it was part of the regs, i.e. i HAD to put them on the towel rails, which i doubted then and doubt even more now given the last document i found

That was the document I was about to quote from.

    It contradicts itself.
First it states " TRV's on all radiators in the second or further heating zones"

The first heating zone to have a room stat.

Secondly it states " If a room stat is already fitted then fit TRV's on at least those radiators in the sleeping areas if not already fitted".

    so....it's even clearer !! :confused::confused::confused:

It seems to suggest that their is a requirement for TRV's on all radiators in NEW dwellings unless you have a room stat which is fair enough but note no mention of towel rails.

Then it goes on to suggest the use of TRV's is only required in bedrooms with existing dwellings.

If i am reading it right that seems fairly clear ????

    I think............

    I hope......................

    Maybe...............................

Just watching Jack Dee he was talking about plumbers, said it made him laugh to think about a little dog filling in all the forms, maybe the dog thought up the new regs!:rotfl:
