Does Being In Debt Ever Just Get To You?

My OH was the same & it's partly my fault as i deal with all the finances & it has led to us falling out in the past as she couldn't understand hy we couldn't afford things. Now instead of telling her we can't afford this,we can't afford that i ask her to sit down with me every payday & we go through everything together & now she understands why we can't afford things. In my opinion i think you should sit down with OH & do something similar.nirelandguy wrote: »My OH knows the mess we are in but it does not bother her, she is always happy 24/7, she actually has more debt than me and is not one bit worried about it. Just wanted to say that you are not alone with these feelings...I get them all the time. I hate it how every morning at work everyone goes to the coffee shop and gets cakes and coffee and now I don't go anymore. At lunch people go to the pub for lunch and in a moment of weekness I joined them the other day and at the cheapest lunch being £8 and it was minging, I won't be doing that again! Also after work, not being able to pop to the shop and buy my DD some sweets and maybe myself a drink on a Friday night and then weekends get worse! I really want to try and find some free stuff to do, but with no transport and my DD being 11 and a half, it's hard to find stuff. We live in the city too and not many nice places to go for a walk. It does get so very hard. I know what you mean about people talking about their tv's Ipod's etc and that makes everything worse. One woman was chatting about how she is going to the states for a month and swimming with the dolphins etc....Grrrrrr! I haven't had a weeks holiday since I was 6! I hate the fact that I work all day every day during the week, am bringing up DD on my own and I can't have a little treat every now and then! But I know that in a few years time, I will be free of all my debt (about 20 grands worth) and we be able to have holidays and somewhere nice to live etc and do exciting things like the rest of them! But without the debt hanging over me! One day...just seems like was quick to rack up the debt but taking forever to pay it off as days are going soooo mega slow and seems like ages away till every payday! Chin up though sweets! You can do this!:j 'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' - DFW Nerd member 866 :j0

Hi nirelandguy
When you next see your work mates and they go for the coffee or big mac at lunchtime - just say to yourself that they are getting further into debt (and I think from reading this site so much that half of them sure are) and you are climbing out. When they decide to do the same you will be so SO many rungs above them and be first to start enjoying the money that is left over each month.
I have found myself in a similar position this last year, what with th cost of moving back to the Uk, setting up a home, seperating from my wife and having to start furnishing a new rental etc. It's getting tough. Even today the electricity bill arrived but luckily I was able to swap tarrifs over the phone and they will spread the cost over the next couple of months, otherwise heaven knows how I would have found the £255 for this quarter! A small 2 bedroomed terraced house - goodness what my old house bill is but that's for my ex to sort out
But going back to your original post, one thing I used to do when we lived in Stornoway and walked into town was to follow the route most of the kids took and guaranteed each day I would find at least 50p on the pavement from where they dropped their cash. I always pick up the money, even if it is a penny. That's a penny for my son!! I've also started charging for helping out other people with their computers. If you are slightly savvy with a computer you can help, as loads of people are still paying way over the odds to take their computers in for a virus scan etc.
Your kids will still love you whether you buy them sweets or not and the library always has a paper. Go there whilst the kids get to read the other books.
Good luck mate and well done on your ladder!!0 -
Complete see where you're coming from. It's crap not being able to have the things you want or even be able to nip down the shop and get something as mediocre as a newspaper...
But don't worry hun, it does get better.

It really does get better-some great suggestions here for free/really cheap activities you can do.
It's rubbish sometimes, but then that's why we're here-I can spend whole afternoons on MSE and the time just flies by

.... The short answer is yes, even with my little bit of debt.....
I had a really stressy moment yesterday because of it..... This last month has been really tight for us.... well me, because OH doesn't seem to give a !!!! most days!
Its payday on Friday, but we have a wedding to go to on Saturday, and OH will be trying to keep up with the Jones' in the same way he always does.... then allegedly we are going to a pub on Mothers Day...... over-priced, mass produced food - great!
I hate being in debt and can't wait to be free of it.... I must admit tho, I feel a bit righteous when I see people buying big expensive things, because I wonder how much debt they are carrying to be able to 'afford' it...
I agree with BH too, how many times have people looked at u funny when u say that u can't afford something or you are trying to be debt free..... I'm sure we will have the last laugh there!'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars' - Oscar Wilde0 -
