Sheffield to Ealing, M1 or M40?

It depends when you travel, if its anywhere near rush hour I would use the M40. You will avoid the roadworks on the M1 near Luton, and don't have to use the car park known as the M25.0

To get from Sheffield, you'll be coming down the M1, I'd stay on the M1 and go to Ealing using the A406.
For some reason, the direction signs to places like wembley want people to go around the M25 join the M40 and come into London that way, no idea why when Wembley is 5 minutes from the bottom of the M1 and the recommended route is much longer.0 -
M1 then A406 definitly. The A406 is always busy ... especially on Hanger Lane (allow 20mins or so just on that half mile stretch). If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

We have friends in Ealing and I always use the M40 to get there travelling from Leeds. The M1, especially with the roadworks around Luton can quickly turn into a nightmare.0

Hi vix2000,
Yes agree the M40 generally the better option. One thing worth mentioning i think is the lack of many services on the M40 - so not to much fizzy pop during thr journey unless you have a cast iron bladder. lol0 -
The M40 without question but the next question is how to get there.
Now you can come down the M1 then jump onto the A42/M42 at Nottingham and go around the bottom of Birmingham.
BUT
You can keep going down the M1 to Leicester and then pick up the M69 (the motorway that time forgot) and then end up on the M42 a bit further south. As long as you don't do this stretch at rush hour it should be quicker.
Of course if you are doing the journey in the middle of the night, head straight down the M1.0 -

You can also take the A43 just after Northampton which takes you half way down the M40 near to Bicester. If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0 -

Can't say I've ever had a problem with the M1 works, yeh you can't go over 50, but I don't think it's ever been that slow, even in rush hour0
