My dress. <Caution> May contain extensive waffling

  • I'm 5'6 and with a couple of inches on my heels I imagine I wouldn't need to have the dress taken up but my nana was a seamstress so it wouldn't be much of a problem, same with if it had to be taken in. I don't want to order it too big and end up with it looking butchered if it has to be taken in a lot though...

Did contemplate having a millies bridal but just not brave enough, I really couldn't spare the £100 if it didn't look right... Plus I'll still have the size issue when giving my measurements...

I'm going to get a list of questions together and email the bridal shop I think, then take it from there...

Thank you to everyone that didn't get too sleepy reading my waffle and managed to reply!

Have you tried on any dresses yet? I would recommend trying on a lot of dresses first, rather than just choosing one from a website. They can look very different on and its a lot of money to spend if you decide you don't like it when it arrives. Is there a stockist locally?

Bridal shops have great sales too, my local one just had all of their last years stock drastically reduced, so you'd be paying the same amount as the dress from the US without the stress of ordering from abroad.

You do need to factor in charges (customs duty and VAT of 17.5%) on top of the cost too.

I have found this online store:
    http://www.islandelegance.co.uk/sale1.html

The link takes you straight to the sale page, they have dresses on there for under £200 and they are quite pretty, they have five dresses on sale each week, and they accept returns on unaltered dresses:

I've not used them but perhaps someone else has, my dress is coming from a bridal shop in Yorkshire. What you could do is take yourself off to a professional dress maker and wearing the shoes for your big day get measured, length etc and then provide the details. You could also try some of the wedding websites such as:
https://www.youandyourwedding.co.uk where people sell their dresses and accessories.

    Good luck and congrats

I've tried a few on and looked at hundreds in the shops, in magazines and on the internet... No others seem to measure up lol.

(And I've factored in the customs charges and things too)

I agree, I knew as soon as I put on my dress that it was the one I wanted. :)

I do have several tiaras, veils and jewelry sets though!

  • I've scanned through the thread and agree that you should try on a few dresses of different styles first - if for no other reason than its fun and you'll be the centre of attention.

Have you considered trying to find a dress-maker? Take the picture with you and see what could be done and for what price. You would have a dress that is very similar to your picture but it would be individual to you, no-one else would have one exactly the same and you can then get it fitted nearer the day when you know exactly how much weight you have managed to shed.

BG I've just put my sheets on the line and its now absolutely chucking it down completely out of the blue.

I've only got the one tiara but have 2 jewellery sets for myself and the bridesmaids and am still looking. I also had 2 pairs of shoes but have now sold one pair on eBay.

I'm undecided about a veil at the moment. I'm waiting for my dress to arrive before I decide. If I don't go with the train which is detachable I'm thinking about having a cathedral length veil instead.

I wish I wasn't so indecisive it's driving me potty!

So many decisions and only 1 day..............................

Its ridiculous isn't it! I think its the fact that you have to book so far in advance. Too much time to spend changing your mind, surfing Ebay, wandering round the various bridal shops!

At least when the day is over and I'm home from honeymoon I'll have plenty of ebaying to keep me busy

I've got 2 sets of jewelry, one for the day (and photos) and another for the evening... Got one tiara I don't think I'm going to wear, have seen some gorgeous ones in a shop near my nan's but don't want to fork out £60 for something that might not go with the dress....

Same with shoes and veil, what if I buy it all and end up with an ivory dress?! I agree with you Philippa, it's just too far away for me to make my mind up now and guarantee I won't change it again lol.
