removing water marks from leather?

Options
hello, hope this is in the right place :o

anyone know if water marks can be removed from a leather coat, at home?

I have a tan leather coat which unfortunately ended up dangling in a beer puddle in a pub, didn't even realise till the following day. now there's a big mark on the front of the coat, a line where the beer must have soaked up to and I'm hoping it can be shifted, or at least made to look a bit better. it's not just a surface mark, it's soaked right through the leather. my gorgeous coat went from looking fabulous to charity shop reject in the space of one evening :( I should learn to go to places with cloakrooms!! lol

been round a few dry cleaners and leather specialists, the cheapest price I've been given is £42, they'd have to send it away and can't guarantee the stain would come out. she even said the cleaning process might make the leather brittle and damage it even more. one woman even told me I'd be better off buying a whole new coat rather than getting it cleaned  is she avin a larf??

so if anyone has any ideas how I might be able to shift or lessen the look of the stain it'd be much appreciated

cheers

There are a couple of suggestions in this earlier thread about a smelly leather coat that could help you:-

I'd probably sponge off what I could and go over the rest with shoe polish.. but I'm strange on a good day.

I'd quite likely sling it in the washer.. it isn't wearable as it is so you've nothing to lose.. fully immersing it might just do the trick and make it all the same..

  • Don't waste your money on getting it done at the dry cleaners - I brought a leather jacket off ebay and when it arrived it was covered in water marks and I payed £35 to get it cleaned and it was no better after it was done. Apparently the leather isn't properly treated these days 'cause everyone wants cheap clothes and this is why water stains.
Sorry I don't have any ideas to get rid of the stains but didn't want you to waste any money getting it cleaned.
  • thanks :T

will give the saddle soap and leather wipes from the other thread a try, even if they don't work it'll be worth the go - I'm definately not taking it to a cleaners after they told me it'd likely do more damage

not sure about dunking it in the sink though, that scares me!! lol
maybe if nothing else touches it I might as a last resort. as it is I can still wear it, I just look like a grufty student/tramp :rotfl: I'm reluctant to do anything too harsh as I don't want to ruin it completely, I absolutely love it and there's no way I can afford to replace it (it actually only cost me a fiver due to final sale reductions, christmas vouchers and a fair deal of haggling, but it was originally £150 and flukey bargains like that don't come along very often) and I hate having to chuck anything away - just call me mr trebus hehe. thanks for the suggestion though, I woulden't have thought of doing that
