    I don't know the ins and outs of the case of course, but I believe the following is true: if your friend hired a no-win-no-fee solicitor to pursue a compensation claim against another party and the other party won the case, then your friend may have paid £2k in legal costs to the other side rather than to the solicitor he had acting for him. If this was the case, your friend could have tried to take out an insurance policy which would have meant, should he lose the case, the insurer would pay the other party's costs and not your friend. I think the no-fee only relates to when you win and your solicitor recoups his costs from the other side.

    The solicitor should have the case file kept safely for up to 6 years after the end of the case (this may have changed as it's been a few years since I worked for one). And having retrieved "dead files", it can take a few weeks to locate depending on the organisation of the files which might not be kept in the same building.
    After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.
