As title says, housebuilders are responding to difficulties in the market by building a lot less houses.
If this continues number of new build properties is likely to be less than 120,000 this year.
Bit less than the 240,000 the Government wants.

If Alistair Darling has any political and economic sense he'll tax the landbanks of those housebuilders in the March budget, and make them build or sell to someone who will.
Some of the housebuilders have five years' worth of building land in the pipeline even at the older, faster, speeds.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -

most builders do have land banks
however most of these don't have planning permission on
infact most builders landbanks are outside the development zone - they are usually waiting for councils to update their development plans so they can apply for planning0 -
That's interesting because my wife and I were only saying the other day how many new houses were being built at the moment. Purely based on the fact that within about a mile radius of where we are currently living, about 8 people seem to be splitting up their gardens/land and building houses on it.0

should be noted that the main reason we have such high house prices in the UK is beacuse of our planning system0
