Hiya- not sure if this will help at all, but what your wife has set up is called a continuous authority. Unfortunately the bank are correct, and it's different to a direct debit. It's basically a guaranteed form of payment, so they have to honour it.
I would possibly ask your bank if they have a 'Joint Account Dispute' team. Currently your name is on an account that your wife (technically - as it's her card) is drawing money out of. You are no longer together, and want this to stop. Therefore it would class as a dispute. They may be able to freeze the account so that neither of you can deposit or withdraw.
Not sure if that is the right advice or not, but they might be able to point you in the right direction even if they can't stop the payments themselves."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -
Hi, Paf,
No advice I'm afraid, just a similar story... Joint acct with Abbey National could only be closed with both mine and ex husbands signiture. Oh and he would only sign if I paid off the debt (which needless to say was his...) The bank then managed to !!!! up the closing of the acct and continually tried to charge me for it. Finally got it sorted, but no sort of apology from them, of course.0
