how'd you find the square footage [ and meterage] of a house?
we've got 3 floors, so do I measure all around the outside of the house and times it by 3?, or do I have to measure each room?

Measure around the outside and multiply by 3. You need the gross floorspace. External walls are 9" (22.5cm) thick so this can take out a fair chunk otherwise.
There is a pretty good measuring tool in Google Earth as well. Depends on how good the image is above your house but it is possible to get a pretty accurate result.0
