I don't know much about investment bonds, but surely it would entirely depend which investments you made within the bond? At medium risk, you might think somewhere around the 8-10% mark was acceptable, while for higher risk you could be looking at 12-15% on average.

The Investment Bond is only the 'wrapping'

The rate of return you could expect is entirely dependant on what Investments you place within the 'wrapper' and the charges deducted

  • The investmet bond is hoped to pay for care fee's in private home care for mother, IFA suggested this should get a 7.5% return, hence the reason for the bond, still leaves us way short of the total needed

As others have said, if the bond is just the tax wrapper. If you put a cash fund in there then you will get around 4%. If you put a China fund in there then you could be plus/minus 50%.

Its the investments that give the returns. Not the tax wrapper.

Any reason why an investment bond is being used instead of unit trusts? Has an immediate care annuity been considered? What provider for the investment bond and what funds have been recommended?
