you could make some fishcakes with the tuna or salmon, chop a bit of onion up a dollop of mash and season it, then mix it into cakes with an egg to bind and fry, or make a fish pie with fried onion sweetcorn and mushrooms mixed in with fish add a white sauce then top with mash.

slice steak into strips and use with fajita kit.

    mmm fish cakes sound ace!!

doh! would never have thought of having steak fajitas!! oops!!
I need to get better at this thrifty thing!! lol xx

it just takes a bit of imagination, i think most of us only start to make things out of the cupboards out of nessicity (sp?) when we are really skint for the first time. we`ve all been there at some point although im always skint :rotfl: its good to have a good clearout of the cupboards anyway once in a while or you end up with cupboards stuffed full of stuff you dont use and nowhere to put the stuff you do!
have just seen something else you could make...cornish pastys:- roll the pastry out into circles then use a mix of cubed cooked veggies and small pieces of cooked burger or sausage or steak, season it well with salt/pepper then close them up and with a lick of milk or egg on top to brown it should be delish.
proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance! :p

  • Hi - you could try BUTTER BEAN MASH - it's delicious, my favourite recipe for butter beans
Cook an onion in butter until golden, meanwhile cook the butter beans for 5 minutes, drain and add onion. Swizz with a blender and add pinch of salt if you want.
Makes a lovely change / addition to mashed potato and would work really well with sausages and sweetcorn....

    Quite keen moneysaver......

I always add creamed coconut to my vegetable curry ( I may be strange but thats how I like it!!)- you could try adding the korma sauce and bunging in some more cubed potatoes to bulk it up. That way you could freeze some to have later in the week.

I think that the other thing is with when you have limited resources in the way of food stocks, you try and make it into the things that you always have and of course you can't always. It takes another pair of eyes or 10 to look at the list and say "have you thought of so-and so?" I'm sure you make things you've never tried before.

Hi, check out www.cookingbynumbers.com it's a great site where you select the ingredients you have in the cupboard and it tells you what you can make and gives you the recipe. Fantastic for the end of the month :)
  • Yes PurpleIvy - you are right. That's the great thing about this site. I have lost count of the threads I've read and thought "I could make that/ never thought of trying that etc". My whole family eat really well now, I cook from scratch and we're never bored with our food. Trying things I've read about on here has also given me the confidence to try out my own ideas to suit our tastes. The trouble with a lot of recipe books / shows is if you don't have all the ingredients (usually about 50 items!) you don't bother. MSE has given me the confidence to 'wing-it' a bit.... and it works!!!
