There's a flaw with the payphone idea...
What's to stop someone from pluging in a normal phone?

I suppose it depends on how much you use the phone. Mobiles can be cheap in other ways - i.e. no subscription costs on a PAYG, but if you make many calls - and long ones, then yes - a landline may be cheaper. The thing is though, that many people already have a mobile - and with inclusive minutes - and this may negate any saving by having to pay subscription on a landline. Plus the fact that everyone may be arguing over who pays what.0 -
True, but if a payphone is already there, is someone going to go out and spend thier money on another phone, even a cheapie, for the sake of making a few calls?? And if it was seen by flatmates, then its likely to cause some arguments, and tbh, I dont really know that many students who would simply go ahead and do it - either because they are lazy and couldnt be bothered with the hassle, or because it might put house harmony in jeopardy. Only a true a$$hole would probably do it!

2. most internet connections (the cheaper ones anyway)
3. landlines are much cheaper for other people to call
4. people who don't want to have to pay mobile rates for 'lo-call' rate numbers.
5. means people can leave messages with housemates - I became very good friends with my housemate's mum this year from the millions of messages I took!
We've had ntl all year, but they're being tw*ts now we want to cancel cos we're moving (their loss, they cant get the digibox back cos we're leaving tommorrow! Between 4, landline line rental is only a couple of quid a month, I've found that my hosuemates are all trustworthy and admit to their phone calls - only prob was when housemate charged me for a 2hr call to my own mobile, why would I be calling myself?!?! We have cable TV and the same applied to the pay-per-view (a few of which were rather 'ahem' :rotfl: ) - everyone admitted theirs.0
