Claim a CCA from them. If they provide one, then you owed it, and you can't reclaim. If they don't provide one, then you mispaid the money and can claim it back from them. This may involve CCJs etc if they don't just cough it up.
It's a very similar process to reclaiming the bank charges - reclaiming money that should never have been taken.
