Supermarket Secrets revealed?

"Food for Thought" my OH told me a few years ago that if I bought meat from the supermarket he would go veggie.. he is a true meatand 2 veg kinda guy so that was serious!
I buy all my meat from a butcher on the local market, he also sells chicken that has not been pumped full of chemicals and fat, I think it is less expensive and it's definitely tastier than anything from the supermarket.
Chikadee I see you are in Lancashire, are you anywhere near Bury?
If so I could recommend a couple of suppliers for you.0 -
Will this programme be repeated as I missed it because I had relatives who decided to visit today as they are going home tomorrow, please say yes it is being repeated?0

I went to a talk by Joanna Blythman author of 'Shopped' (who was on the prog)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0007158033/
She was asked this question and said that she wouldn't buy supermarket organic chickens, although she did not elaborate on why. If you do buy organic chicken in the supermarket look for Soil Association approved ones - they have to meet certain minimum standards:
http://www.soilassociation.org/web/sa/saweb.nsf/Living/organic_standards.html
Your best bet is probably your local butcher, at least you can ask him/her where the chickens came from and how they were raised.

if you have access to cable/sky, it is almost certain it will be shown on s4c (the welsh channel, which is 752 on cable) within a week, or failing that it will more than likely be shown again on c4/e4know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

Thanks for responding! Do not have cable, only have Sky. Going to record it on Tuesday as previously stated.0 -
After watching it I'm definately not happy about buying chicken at the supermarket any more but the thing is how do I know if the chicken in my local butchers is any better? I know I could ask him but he could tell me anything really if he wants a sale.
I'd be happy to pay extra if I could be sure the chicken had been humanely reared and not pumped full of drugs but I can't find anywhere nearby that sells organic other than the supermarket. I'd love to buy fresh organic veg too but there's no local box schemes I can find, there is a farmers market close-by every 3 weeks but last time I was there there was no organic veg and the meat was all exotic stuff!
Why is it so hard to find organic fresh fruit, veg & meat from local suppliers? My local "pick your own" uses sprays and they've also started selling veg but it's not even locally grown!
Has anyone in the north-east found a reputable organic veg or meat seller?Dum Spiro Spero0
