Hi guys,
We live in West London zone3, and have a few builders coming to give us quote on the work below.
We had a quote of 5k including all materials, including Bosche combi condense boilder 2.1i and external door, however, we provide kitchen (BnQ kitchen of 2.2k) and applicances. Would like to hear advice on it, to see if it's reasonable.
Also, if we decide to go ahead with this builder, what do we need to do next, draw up a contract ? or do we need to see their proper company registration ?
Advice appreciated.
Thanks :-D

Hi
How much were the other two quotes?

we have totally 4 quotes... quite shocked at their differences.
1. proper local company, and have been recommended by a neighbour, and sure they will do stunning job, however, I am totally stunned by their quotes.. roughly 8k + boiler fee.. and they suggested to change fuse box to bring it up to meet current electricity regulations...i find it too much to afford, it's all broken down itemised, i.e, connecting dish washer is bloody 160 pounds. i nearlly fainted.
2. two polish guys, they hardly speak proper english, are recommended by an online forum, and they gave me a quote of 5.8k.. the current one we have, was originally 5.8k, suppose, there's margin to negotiate to the same price.. well... their timing is not perfect.. will need to wait a week or two.
3. an illegal immigrant who gave me a good quote of 2.1k to have everything done, bit worried to hire him though.
4. a polish guy, who seems to be quite descent, well, gave us 1.6k for the kitchen+doorway, and 2.5k for the boiler, suppose, it's around 4.1k, sounds too good to be true, looks like those 1 person company.
5. another guy came last Sat, one hour before the appointment time, very rude, and very pushy, not comfortable to deal with. can't even stand him for that 20 min while he was at our place.. and don't trust him at all., still now, haven't given me back any quote yet.
6. a few other guys came along, never bothered to get back to us with quotes, nor even bothered to reply my emails or phone calls..never undestand this people.. if they are not interested, why r they bothered to come !!??
There's a one company which is supposed to be very reliable, as my previous posh landlord's been using them, well, they need to pre-book 2 months in advance.. no chance for now..
This is my horriable experience.. what do u guys think ? is this relatively fair !?.. it's the best option we've.. the guy looks reasonable, local, easy to talk to,.. however, i still cant' find his company registered anywhere !!> any idea of some places I can check up his company ?0 -
Hi
A company recommended by a neighbour, or a couple of Polish from an internet forum.
Hmmmm....... if I said use the local recommendation would you?
Which one has the ability to notify your boiler (or is even going to use a registered installer?)
Which one in, six months time,(or maybe a bit longer) is most likely to be trading (in this country?)
Even if you find company details on the Polish how will that make them come back and finish your job, or rectify any faults?
All the above apply to both builders, but which one was recommended?
It doesn't matter who you choose you should make sure you have a written agreement on what exactly will , or won't, be done. Then there is no argument later.
Public liability insurance is essential.
Come back and tell us how it all went?

Thanks for your reply..
What is ' Public liability insurance', are builders supposed to provide it ?
Is written quote a formal agreement, or it's better to draft up contract or sth !?..
It's all a gamble.. Anybody knows the way of finding out if the builder's company is registered somewhere !?
Cheers,

Hi,
Just for cost comparison, hubby and I been thinking of getting new kitchen. Got quotes from Homebase £8.5k, Magnet £12k, MFI £9. Awaiting quotes from 2 local companies. Above (first!) quotes inc supply (hi gloss, 21 units + oak worktop), fitting, removal, plumbing, electrical. Does not include flooring and lighting. Quotes also inc supposed discounts.
Quote from BGas for "Glowworm Flexicom" boiler, fitting, powerflush, magnaclean(?), 1 yr homecare: £4K!!!!!!
Need to lie down in a darken room to recover from the shock....0
