Empty properties are historically more prone to claims due to squatters, petty malicious damage and damage by burst pipes etc.

It should be insured in the name of "Executors of relative name deceased" to ensure any payout will go to the estate.

Most insurers will not touch an empty property in isolation because the premium to claim ratio on this class of business means they lose money on it. They are normally only prepared to do it where a) they have insured the property in the past or b) it is part of a larger property portfolio.

Try your own insurers and see if they would be prepared to do it for you for starters.

If you do find someone, they will normally insist on all services being disconnected apart from power to any alarm system, water systems drained down and letterboxes sealed. In some inner city areas they may also insist on boarding up of the windows.
Weekly inspections will also be needed.

You could try the following unoccupied property insurers and brokers:
    Camberford Law:020 8315 5000
    Howe Maxstead 020 8309 1717
    Atkinson Smith 01302 341 344
    Lawley Insurance Brokers 01753 537 100

If no luck with any of them try the British Insurance Brokers' Association on 0870 950 179
