I had an ex-LL that wrote me a very rude (and uncalled for) letter. He used to insist on the rent in cash and refused to give a receipt. I rang the taxman. The next time I drove past his place it was up for sale. I hope the two incidents were related.

Interesting article from the Tory graph but a nothing story created just for the headline.

If you read to the end of the article you will find:

Peter Goodman, senior tax partner of accountants Wilkins Kennedy, said: "There has often been speculation that Revenue & Customs would start a compliance drive against landlords, but up until now enquiries have been pretty piecemeal. This is a real change in tactics.

He added: "Those who did not receive a letter this week and believe they may have escaped the Revenue's grasp should note that this is only a pilot exercise for ongoing interventions that will start later this year."

Quite right. Responsible landlords provide a valuable service to the public, especially given that 'social housing' has become so neglected in recent years.

However, amatures who try to be a landlord 'on the sly', don't pay tax on their rent and defraud mortgage providers are nothing but bad news for their tenants.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.
