if you're going to get a 206 don't get the basic model. My mum has recently got rid of hers and it was the worst car i've either driven, an absolute pig. It's worth paying the extra for luxuries such as power steering0

I've currently got a Peugeot 206 Sports top of the range and brand new as a loan car from an insurance company. I really like it but my husband hates it as it is quite a jerky car to drive and the pedals seem badly positioned.
I'm lookiing around to buy a new car at the moment and will probably get the Citreon C3 Desire which is being heavily discounted.
Out of interest though I test drove a Yaris this morning and it seemed very slow compared to the C3, I also hated the brakes, it just didn't want to stop. Nice looking car though.
I had looked at nearly new cars but there seems very little price difference at the moment between new and nearly new cars due to discounting (I am a good negotiater!). We even saw a year old C3 that cost the same as I had been quoted for a new one.

I have a Peugeot 206 LX Look model on a 2000 reg plate. I had it from new and it has been a great car. I have never had a problem with it and although I no longer need it for commuting, I did use it for that without a problem. I have the 1.4 engine with aircon. I wouldn't recommend a lower engine size though as it could be very noisy on the motorway! Also, it qualifies for reduced road tax being a 1.4 or below model - always worth considering!
Oh as a side note, I use a child seat in it - when I had the infant carrier up front I could turn the airbag off with a key switch which was very useful.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

I also noticed that on the loan 206 I have, it's very useful. It's an absolute must to turn off the passenger airbag when you have a child seat in the front.

I have a fiat punto go, have not had any problems with it, it is only a small engine 1.2 but even on that the insurance is still high enough! I would suggest to test drive as many cars as possible. Its the only way you will get a feel for whats out there.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090

My last car was a Fiat Punto 60SX and I was happy with it until someone wrote it off 10 days ago. That had a 1298 cc engine which was actually a nice little mover.
It wasn't until I saw the amount of damage to it that I decided to take notice of the new NCAP ratings, my Punto was over 5 years old so had a low rating, but the car that hit me was brand new and suffered very little damage. I bought a new car specifically because it has a 4 star NCAP rating.

The NCAP ratings are useful, but shouldn't be taken as gospel, for two reasons.
First, even if you're in a 5-star supermini, you come up against a 3-star (or even 2-star) Mondeo-class or bigger, especially MPVs and 4x4s, you'll still be flattened. These tests only test for you hitting a wall essentially.
Secondly there seems to be significant disagreement between the NCAPs around the world. The Kia Sedona MPV was given 5 stars in the USA, yet only 2 stars here. Where that leaves Sedona owners I'm not sure. I'm not 100% convinced of the reliability of these programmes.0 -

You are probably right. I was only going by the fact that my Punto was written off and virtually crushed but the new mini that hit me hardly damaged at all. Luckily I had no back seat passengers as the boot was pushed into the back seat which was very scary.

My younger daughter has a Ford Ka 1.3 Style and my elder daughter has a 206 1.4 . Now I don't suppose i've driven it enough to judge as i've only gone around the block in the 206 , but I didn't particularly like the feel of it , although granted , it may just be that it takes a bit of getting used to
, but I often borrow the Ka and I enjoy driving it very much. Same old same old since 20080 -
I've got a 206, 2000 reg, 1.4 LX. I bought it 2 years ago for £5300 plus my trade-in, am hoping to sell it later this year for about £3300 ish. It drives well, parks easily, and I've had no reliability problems with it, although the exhaust is getting a bit rattly. Petrol seems to go quite a long way as well, especially compared to our Golf GTI, which we always seem to be filling up!
Also, I had a crash in it - 40mph head-on, came off a bend in the road at night - and whilst the crumple zone did it's job and the car looked pretty bad, I actually felt very safe and was completely unhurt. I was very glad at the time that I wasn't in my brother's old Peugeot 205 for example, as I think I'd have come off a lot worse.
It's not anything fancy - but it really suits my requirements. I did think about a Polo, but you pay so much more for less.0
