Npower say I was undercharged

I switched from Npower to British gas in June last year when I moved into my new house. Previously in my rented accomodation Npower were my electricity supplier. I lived there for 7 months and had a token metre. I have received a letter today (!) from Npower saying that the meter was undercharging me therefore I owe them £58.35. Can they do this and if so why has it taken them 9 months to come to this conclusion.
During my time in the rental house I do recall someone coming to reset the meter ( I remember it clearly just not the date). Also after I left Npower I had all sorts of problems sorting out final payment. It was eventually sorted out and they sent me a cheque for £26.
I appreciate its not a huge sum they are asking for, but surely this is their own fault and not mine. Do I have to pay this? I'm not even sure who to ask for advice, hence a plea to all you clever people! Thanking you all in advance.

Unfortunately they can. npower are one of the companies still chasing for this money. The meter is a way of collecting money and may not be set right. 3 companies will waive the difference, three won't.0

That just seems so unfair, but I suppose its not worth getting into a fight with them about it. Well they'll certainly never win my custom back again!
