When this happened to us we had to reboot the router.

Have you changed/upgraded your firewall as the fact that you can access some sites indicates that you are shut out? Its worth checking your firewall settings.

i have changed my anti-virus from avg to avast, however everything was working ok for the first few days. problems started a few days after i had made the changeover.

what is a router, is it in the computer or something external, because if its external i dont have one. and if its internal i dont know where to find it!
how do i check my firewall settings?
i have msn firewall which shows as 'on'.

A router is a miniature computer (sort of) which directs internet traffic to other comps. If you have only one comp you are unlikely to need/have a router. Its usuallu an external box connected to a modem or has a modem inside it. I'm not sure how to check xp firewall as I don't use it I suggest you find the windows box where you can turn on/off the firewall and look at the "do not allow exceptions box"to see its unticked and look at the top for exceptions click this page and see if your e-mail etc is unticked.
I also suggest you download Zonealarm or other software firewall as XP's one is generally not up to the task. Do not run 2 firewalls at the same time as they will argue. Turn off the xp one.
    hope this helps

You don't have Broadband, so you won't have a router.
You can turn off sytem restore, XP_ Firewall and disable Avast by right clicking on the icon in the bottom right hand corner and making the appropriate selection.

This is for you to try to find what is interfering with your internet connection.(It's unlikely that you'll download a virus surfing a trusted site, so don't worry).

Once you've finished, just reboot the computer and run an antivirus or spyware scan before reconnection to the internet.

You can also try installing the Opera browser and checking whether the problem is the same.

on hindsight, i think the problem may have started when i deleted aol companion as a window appears every time i start up my computer telling me to re install aol.
can i reinstall aol companion without signing on to aol and see if that sorts the problem out.
if not i will try donnies suggestion as above
    thanks

this may seem a bit dumb, but on following your instructions as above , how will i find out what the problem is?????????
