Notice period with expired fixed term contract

Hi guys, I am wondering if you can help my friend. I regularly post on MSE, and am something of an addict, and when my friend asked my advice on an employment issue, my first impulse was to come to you!

We both work for the same employer, a very large company with over 8,000 employees. She started working nearly 9 months ago on a 4 month fixed term contract. the employer then asked her to extend this until the 31st march (a further 6 months). However she has not been asked to sign an additional contract after the original contract for the 4 months fixed term, which required her to give 8 weeks notice, as is standard for the grade she is on at work. Through a colleague she has learnt that the manager believes she is on a one month roll over contract where her manager can give one months notice to terminate her employment. She has an interview for another job, and at present she believes she will be ending on the 31st March, however the interview isn't until early March if she is offered this job can she say she is free to work from 1st april or is she required to give notice if so 4 or 8 weeks? Also, we've learnt that her manager intends to roll over month to month after the 31st march, but has not informed her of this.

All advice is greatly appreciated, D x

I would say as there is no written contract in place at the moment the best thing is to get this clarified through CAB/ACAS or even the HR department.
Personally if there is no problem with the relationship to the company I would go and get the written confirmation that the fixed term contract ends 31st of march and whether or not she will be required to provide 8 weeks notice or not.
But that might just be me :)

I thought that generally you couldn't be asked to give more notice than your employer is required to give to you, but ACAS would know for sure (as tine already said).
