Just remember two other places, The Clubhouse Hotel on Great Western Road and The Dutch Mill on Queens Road. They might not be so well known.

I was going to suggest the Crown in Bervie, also Royal in Laurencekirk, maybe also Redhall Arms in Fordoun just north of L/kirk, there's also a guest house on A90 Criggie Smithy i think it's called....

25 miles/30 minutes drive from city though for any of them.

It's about 7 miles from Aberdeen city centre, about 2-3 miles from the airport. It's in the first village outside of Aberdeen on the Inverness road.

I was working in the area again this week and was able to get into the Station Hotel in Ellon at short notice, good food and reasonable prices and only about half an hour out of Aberdeen.

If it is at late notice you can try laterooms.com they have all the rooms avalible and at reduced prices as they just want someone in the room and dont realy care about getting the full price.

The British Legion Club at Ravenswood in Banchory (18 miles) does accommodation for £29 en-suite B&B - so cheaper than most guest houses. Not fancy but also serves reasonably priced good food and beer. Often busy (especially just now with fishing season), but worth a try if you don't mind travelling in from there.

Of course, it really depends what side of Aberdeen you need to be at in the morning...

Thanks for that but sad to say that I have no internet connection when on the road so this option not available to me.
