hi, am about to apply for refund on rail ticket (bought 2 single cheap day tickets- travel on any train on the date shown) which we didn't use due to change of plan.

Any ideas of a good excuse I can use in order to gtee refund?

You're in luck. You don't need an excuse to get a ticket refund, only that you decided not to travel.
