Even that's not so bad PN as it could at least be a reliable income throughout most of spring, summer and autumn. A good idea - well, if moanymoany's near the cost, but if not you still get holiday lets in towns and the country. Another worth giving thought to.

What might be a bit more lucrative is one off cleaning jobs. Fixed rate.

    For situations like:
    - tenants leaving a flat/house and your landlord wants it professionally cleaning?
    - single and male? Don't be embarrassed to invite the girls back. 1-day, once-off cleaning service.
    - buying a house? We'll go in and deep clean for 2 hours/4 hours/1 day before you move in
    - selling a house and don't want to leave a mess behind, but rushing off to your new one?
    - just can't face it alone? we'll come and help you do a big clean up; let's work together.

Targetting the marketplace sometimes produces a better result to advertising.

I heard the story of a woman who took in ironing. One day she decided she had too much, so she decided to cut down her ironing by JUST advertising a service to single men. Unexpectedly to her, instead, her business virtually doubled overnight because she'd targetted just one part of the market! Worth a thought.

    Good idea!

If any MSE'rs are in east Dorset and fancy helping me doing a one off spring clean, please pm me. I am 37 weeks pregnant and I can't walk at the moment as I've either put my hip out of line or torn a ligament (waiting for Doc to arrive as we speak!).

We've recently been renovating the house and it's an open plan house so there is dust everywhere - plus we have a dog that is currently malting like crazy. Not exactly the environment I want to bring a new baby into :( OH is working shifts full time and when he's not working, he's finishing off the renovations, so he doesn't have any spare time.

It would be mostly hoovering, organising washing (I can't load/unload the washer) and general cleaning (mainly dusting etc). Approx 4 hours and it needs to be later this week/early next week.

    Thanks, Mel

  • Look in your local papers and see what others are charging.

And if no-one is advertising as a cleaner but lots of jobs asking for cleaners? Gap in the market or no profit in it?

A friend of mine has just started cleaning and charges £7 per hour to people she knows, hoping that those people will spread the word (free advertising!) and is charging £9 per hour to people who reply to her advert. Within a week of putting up 4 small adverts in newsagents windows, she has secured 6 weekly "contracts" obviously, hanging onto that work depends on her standards. She works part time in a supermarket and will keep that job, but wanted something completely different as a fill in.
Her partner works as an Amway distributor so she will be using their products, so won't be faced with the discussion of "do I get a discount if you use my cleaning stuff".

With everyone being so busy these days, cleaners do seem to be in demand.

    Good Luck.

Whilst pregnant I looked for a cleaner but couldn't find anyone in my area suitable - reliable, trustworthy, hard working etc

Now that I am on maternity leave and my husband is working shifts I have time available to increase my income. I believe there is a market in my area for someone offering a quality domestic cleaning service.

I've got a couple of questions that someone in this area of work may be able to help me with:

    1) Do you use your own products or the clients? What is your reasoning for this? I was thinking of using natural products e.g. Ecover

    2) What sort of paperwork do you have e.g do you have a contract/agreement detailing what you are going to do for the client

    3) Names - I need a name for business. It will only be me to start but I think it could have the potential to have employees in the future. Names I have come up with include - Dust Maiden, Gold Maiden. I've thought of loads of others but they are already being used. Any more ideas

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I had a cleaner a few years ago and prefered her to use my own stuff as like the smell of cercain stuff etc.
I wouldn't worry too much about a name as people will go on your reputation once yu are up and running.

Don't forget you'll might need some kind of public liability or third party insurance if you are going to be self employed.
