Car Insurance- Claim that wasnt but now is on my history

Can any give me some help and or advice or words of encouragement.
in Nov 2006 i was 'involved' in a car accident. I say involved in the loosest sense of the word.
I was driving along a road and a woman in a car drifted onto my side of the road, as I thought she was going to drive right into me I beeped my horn. She swerved very strongly, and then lost control of her car, flipped it upside down and skidded a bit further down the road.
Me in my car and all the cars behind me at the first swerve slowed down and when she went upsdie down we all stopped and then assisted in helping them out of the car and calling 999.
That day I called my insurance company who said that as there was no damage to my car, and the police had agreed it was not my fault that the accident happened - the insurance people said they would not record it on their system. I was not sure about this and asked them to put some notes in the system so that should the other driver try to claim they would know I had reported it as well.
Time went on I conversed with the police who eventually decided not to press charges on the woman for dangerous driving.
I heard nothing from my insurance company.
THen at the beginning of December i got my renewal form. This was quoting me a huge increase due to a loss of no claims bonus.
obviously annoyed I called htem straight away to find that a man had put a claim in against me saying that as he was pulling out of a side street I had driven into the side of his car. on the same day that the woman had flipped her car upsidedown.
I went through the whole filling in the report sheets and etc. and due to the open claim i had to reinsure with the same company. it took 6 months before they closed the claim due to non communciation from the other party.
They assured me that my no claims was in tact and I got my refund of the extra money I paid for my insurrance.
This December I decided that I could get cheaper insurance. I followed the instructions on this website and got a really good deal. I took up that deal and then when my new insurers called the old ones, they were told i had an extra year no claims than i thought. so I got another discount !
then came the issue. Proof of no claims is required. my old insurers would not give proof to the new insurers, so I requested hard copy and sent it on.
the hard copy however, states that I have had a claim.
new insurers being fabulous and happy to have my business have told me that they will not ask for the money discounted back, but that next year it will be taken into account.
I have called old insurers to try to sort this out but they are uninterested due to me no longer being a customer. and it obviously does not affect them in the slightest.
they did not pay out any money. the claim was not real. how can I get it removed? has anyone else had this? do I just have to pay more again next year?
my no claims bonus was protected so I wont get a big jump up but I am quite annoyed that they refused to remove the note about a claim that was not real and they did not pay.
I apologise for the long story - but I am really feeling out of it. I need some strong words to get old insurers to take off my record that I had a claim against me. surely if the claim is not paid and closed or dropped, then this is no longer a claim?
Thank you very much for your help and support etc in advance.

What a nightmare!
Have you submitted a formal complaint to your old insurer, stating the facts as set out in your posting? I would suggest this is the best place to start and, if you have no joy, refer it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Good luck

Write to them and ask them to confirm that no claims were made whilst you were a policyholder.
Send that letter to your new insurer.
If the old insurer won't help, use the complaints procedure before you go to the Ombudsman.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac
