fridge freezer door left open

Hi I went away for a week and got back yesterday and went in my frezzer to find something to eat and some of the food was soft - I initially thought my freezer had broke but then realised I had left the door open_party_.
So my question is - should I claim on my insurance for the spoilt food or just lob it away ...

thanks in advance

How much was the food worth?
It's never worth making a relatively small claim as you loose no claims bonus and your premiums double (not forgetting any excess).
So unless you had a freezer full of prime meat cuts then it may not be worth it.
  • had my 6'freezer defrost over night a couple of weeks ago, due to excessive ice in backplate.
freezer was insured to be repaired, so got that done.
rang the contents insurance company to make a claim.
they told me to pile all the food up in the garden and take a photo of it and estimate the total cost to replace. said there were no receipts kept and they said that was ok.
estimated it to be £140.........minus the £50 excess, so could have got £90 back.
however, this would affect my renewal premium and i'd have to declare a claim to any new insurers. told it could increase premium by 20/25% next year.
decided it wasnt worth loosing 18 years of no claims.
most policies give you up to £500 for spoilt food, so if you think you could claim for that much in your freezer, go for it.

I would however warn you that from a fraud point of view, eyebrows would start to be raised if you wanted to claim alot without proof.

I'm talking much more than £125 ish here.
