Railcard insurance, does it exist?

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice. I recently bought an annual railcard, but was told that the type of card i bought isn't covered by FirstScotrail if it's lost or stolen.

I can add it onto my contents insurance but it's only covered while it's at home, and something's more likely to happen while i'm out the house than at home.

Any help would be much appreciated

Do you not have personal posessions insurance (for items whilst out of your home) e.g. watch, camera, clothing etc. ?

If not your options are to see whether you can get personal possession cover added to your insurance.

If you can't get that added or they won't cover it then your options are to get something to carry it inside your clothing. I have a cloth wallet that goes round the waist under clothes.

If you really don't think you can take care of it then but you can't get insurance then you could get a monthly card where the loss is smaller.
  • Thanks for your advice, I bought the annual work through a scheme my company runs, and they don't allow you to buy it monthly on the scheme.

I'll ring the insurance company again and ask about personal possessions cover, the guy seemed pretty certain I couldn't have the card covered for away from home.

If that's the case then the risk has to remain with you and you just need to make sure you are very careful.

If you have an inside pocket on your coat then that's a good place to put it as it's difficult for someone to steal it from inside your clothing without you knowing.

My MIL had her handbag stolen from her supermarket trolley whilst she turned round to get some veg. It's easy to do but these are the kind of scenarios that opportunists will take advantage of.

It's annoying but to be honest it's not too difficult to ensure you bag/card is somewhere where it would be very hard for someone to get it without you noticing.
If you want to be ultra-cautious then get one of those travel wallets that's next to your skin or a wallet that you chain to a belt loop and carry it inside your trousers/skirt. It's not the most comfortable way but you'd definitely notice if someone was rummaging inside your clothing and the point is that they simply wouldn't bother and would target the people that have left their bags to go to the loo or get a coffee.
