mobile question

If I bought a pay monthly phone, could I unlock another phone and transfer the sim into it?
Then unlock the new phone and put a pay as you go sim in it?

    Yes.

    Assuming both handsets are unlockable.

If its a brand new phone, unlikely. A lot of the newer phones are harder to unlock and your network certainly aren't going to give it to you (especially still while its in contract). But you could possibly get it unlocked 'down the market', but completely at your own risk and will more than likely invalidate any warranty you have.

If the PAYG sim was on the same network though it will most likely work in the phone anyway.

But the contract would still be paid, but just on a different phone, so why would it matter to them. Would they even know about it?
    Sorry if I'm being thick.

Because they want to retain your money. For instance Vodafone LOVE giving away Pay As You Go simcards when you get a contract/upgrade. And I'm sure the other networks probably do too, O2 are always giving away sims on the net.

If the phone is unlocked you can use that phone with another provider; if its locked you're stuck with that network and have to use their contract or PAYG sim in it so they recoup all the money.

A lot of O2 contract phones come unlocked anyway (I think). Somebody I know on another forum mentioned it and I'm fairly sure the ones my sister has had in the past have been unlocked. Although don't take my word as a given on that!
  • I don't know if things have changed now, but all the contract phones my wife and I have had have been unlocked.

My wife used to to be with Vodafone and they were all unlocked. She changed to O2 last year and the phone she got was unlocked.
The O2 phone I currently have came unlocked. I got it around 10 months ago. The 2 most recent phones came with O2 branding, but my old Orange PAYG SIM worked in it OK.
    Dave.
