I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge an e-cheque is like a normal cheque but electronic, hence it still needs a certain amount of days to clear via the bank even though you may know that you have sufficient funds in your account.... Sometimes this unexplainedly happens via paypal...
  • e- cheques seem to me to be totally erratic. Paypal send you messages saying it will clear in few days and then 10 or more days later you actually get the OK to ship.
    It must be a rip-off!
How in these days of electronic banking can it take that long - I don't believe it.
I almost never buy so don't know how it works, but as seller it is a nightmare!

Especially when buyers don't understand how it works or check their paypal account before complaining about seller.
  • The sellers are just protecting themselves from fraudulant chargebacks. Unfortunately, although its not nice that you have to wait, and is not good practice, you really can't blame the sellers when paypal facilitates fraud so easily.

I am betting since the OP hasn't been back to reply to this thread that their payments have gone through as echeques which means the sellers have NOT received the money into their paypal accounts yet. Surely sellers can't be expected to post goods before payment has gone into their paypal accounts!

If I was selling anything using paypal you can bet I wouldn't send the goods until I had received the money, not some 3rd party organization that aids fraud.

I no long sell on ebay, only buy using paypal with credit card funding, I sell elsewhere using BT, or cleared paypal funds that have hit my account.

    Not really.

    - They're invalidating any seller protection they do have, by delaying despatch
    - If their account goes into minus figures because of a refund, paypal will still chase them for it.

The only sure ways to avoid chargebacks:

    - Post by special delivery to a confirmed address
    - Refund the payment and hide in a box
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • The only sure ways to avoid chargebacks:

    Take cheques.
    "Love you Dave Brooker! x"

"i sent a letter headded sales of god act 1979"

They can chase for payment as much as they want, they've never taken anyone to court over it yet though.

Even posting by special delivery to a confirmed address doesn't stop the "item not as described and I'll send the seller an empty envelope so I have proof of return postage" scam or the "swap my broken innards for the brand new item" scam

Seller protection wouldn't come into it anyways, as I was never a business seller.
