Aldi shops - good or bad?

  • Aldi is far from small. In fact, it's the second largest supermarket chain in the world. They don't have a great number of shops in the UK, but they are huge elsewhere. They do pay their staff extremely well, and although the managers work long hours, they get extremely well rewarded for it.

They actually have an Aldi in Monaco too - quite surreal to see an Aldi car park full of Ferrari's!
  • We have tried Aldi's a couple of times - not bad and have found some good things in there. It's not a shop I go to often

He he, do you ever see him?? I ask, as I worked at the 'other one' for a few weeks as a store manager, pay was great, but boyf started texting me to see if I was ok after a particularly long shift - and he never worries about me! I left, Id rather have a life than get paid really well and never get to spend it!

A point I'd make. Regarding food from Aldi which is an unknown brand. Each and every time you eat in a restrauant, does the menu state where the food you are about to eat was purchased ?, no, of course not. I happen to know a guy who runs two small eat in/take out units, and the greater part of his stock is bought there.

The bio yoghurt from Aldi is the best I have tasted in Britain - and the cheapest.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
  • I must admit to being a bit of a supermarket snob, but having fallen on somewhat sticky times recently I tried our local Aldi.
Well - I take it all back! I havent tried the frozen food, as it looks a bit scary, but have found them excellent for cold cooked meats for our lunch sandwiches, crisps and biscuits, those salt and peppered cashews, and also some of the canned stuff. I do a small shop here then top up with branded stuff at Asda.

I have done my final dissertation on Aldi, so I know the company's inside out and must admit that it is quite impressive. Aldi's owners, two brothers are the richest men in Europe and the company is such as sucess and has been imited by many other companies, Aldi pionneered the low cost idea. When comparing products Aldi is always good quality and as previously said the products are often manufactured by big names such as Nestle and Kelloggs. During my study I found out that the champagne and smoked salmon in Aldi is so good ( was number one in a number of test surveys) that in Germany people from all backgrounds uy it. I bought it and must say that the smoked slamon ( for around 7pounds per kilo) is excellent. I must say that even though the location of stores and the layout is very basic, it is only to bring better products at cheaper prices. As already mentionned, employees are multi-tasking and paid more. If you havent doen so, give it a try, with the advise of forgeting the brand names, as aldi has around 90% of own brand foods, which saves variosu costs, including marketing.

Yeah, the brands are unfamiliar, but for whatever reason it seems that both Aldi and Lidl don't sell own brand stuff, rather they make up a range of own brands (like 'Realvale' cheese or 'snacky-cracky' crisps), which upon closer examination all say 'specially packed for Lidl-stiftung' on the back (or for Aldi obviously). We have both Lidl and Aldi stores in our local town centre but tend to shop in Lidl more as it's nearer. The Aldi is a tidier, better run store though. In both shops the quality of the products is IMO exceptional, especially for the price. The only thing is that they can't seem to compete with supermarket 'value' ranges on price (possibly because they're loss leaders for the supermarkets?). So, we now tend to buy stuff like spaghetti for 16p a packet in Tesco, and most of our meat, cheese, bread etc. in Lidl.
  • Love Aldi brioche, Ciabatta (49p), parmesan, olive oil, cold meat, smoked salmon and Badgers Creek wine. Yoghurt and cheese also really good. Cant get everything from there and queues in my local store are usually long but worth it to get quality stuff at much cheaper prices.
You can if you think you can!
