How do I rent with bad credit?

Due to an IVA (failed) and Bankruptcy on the horizon for both me and my fiance, we are finding it impossible to rent anywhere.
Obviously buying is a no-no so renting is the only option.
However, due to the IVA/bankruptcy, every property we have applied for has been declined at the credit check stage.
Even private landlords we have been to have asked and obviously we can't lie.
The last resort is council accomodation but in our area there is a 3-4 year wait.
We currently have a homeless charity helping us but so far they have only offered properties that have been unfit for our 5 week old baby.

Can anybody offer any suggestions of how we get around this dilemma as our local council and CAB can't help at all?

Thanks in advance.

Where are you living at the moment?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • In these situations unfortunately you need ether a guarantor (perhaps one of your parents?) or a hefty deposit, some private landlords may take 3 months but most agencies will want 6 months if they know your circumstances.

If the above isn’t suitable, try some of the smaller agencies and private landlords. Dress smart and just hope they don’t credit check you. It’s not a legal requirement just something 90% of people will do to protect themselves from tenants who are likely to miss payments.

Remember though you will still most probably need a decent deposit and the first months rent up front just like anyone else renting would.
