Car Insurance - Searching for cheaper quotes?

Hi, I have had my renewal quote through from Sainsburys which is £379.

So I have searched online and have found M&S can offer me same insurance for £300????? I have checked the details, excesses, premium details and everything looks the same. But I just can't believe it's so much cheaper!!

I keep checking and re-checking as I don't understand and fear something is amiss. Is this the same for most people. I even went online with confused.com and Sainsburys quote was about £30 cheaper for the same insurance as my renewal quote???

Any advise - please:think:

as a general rule if you get a quote online at renewal from the company you are already with it will be cheaper - 1st reason your renewal from them will not include an internet discount (bout 10% for most companies) 2nd reason companies tend to add 5-10% on to renewals each year.

finding a price from another company on a like for like basis that is around 20% cheaper does happen, thats not to say it will happen each year.

I work in sales and once saved someone over £700 compared to their renewal on a like for like basis (renewal was £1600)

I had a renewal from UK insurance(insurance via peugeot) and i thought the renewal price was quite high at £348 so i thought id check out direct line and hastings direct, the 2 of them were considerably cheaper than my renewal, it was like for like as in courtesy car included, legal protection and protected no claims plus a second driver on the policy

btw the price DL qouted me was £224(paying it monthly) or £207 in 1 lump sum

  • Had my renewal quote this week of £236 (Virgin), went on moneysupermarket and was quoted £139 (Swiftcover) so bought it through quidco (£40 cashback) so £99! It pays to spend the time shopping around.

Certianly does pay to shop around. My mum had her renewal quote from Liverpool Victoria - £818   , up £279 from last year. Did some shopping around and got a quote for £474 plus £50 off that for taking out the policy. It's still high bit then again she's had a few 'incidents' in the car - LV said to me 'did YOU take out the policy for your mother, she's had a few claims, did you declare them?' - errrr, yes
  • I got my renewal quote through a few days ago, it was £506, that's £150 up on last year so I decided to try out a few comparison sites, I started with Confused.com, the quote that confused produced from my existing insurer was £305 with a £50 cashback promotion so I will be paying £255 instead of £506. Now I'm aware that insurance companies add a bit on to premiums every year but to quote me almost double what I could be paying is bordering on criminal. The only reason I'm staying with them is the cashback which makes theirs the cheapest quote through confused.

My renewal premium was for the same as last year. I went online and checked the AA, £80 cheaper. I went back to my broker and they matched it.
The amazing thing is, that this year I also get free Green Flag cover.

What's even more amazing is that I live in Norn Iron. ( We are usually penalised)
