Wooden sandpit help

I'm currently putting in some decking in the garden and would like to build my son a wooden sandpit with the leftover planks. The pre packed sandpit kits cost a fortune so I would like to build my own but can't find any plans on the internet.

Can anyone help me locate some free plans for a wooden sandpit?

Many thanks

I completely agree, I considered electric fencing like we use around our chicken run but thought social services wouldn't be keen :rotfl:

Just a question, but are the special sandpit kits more expensive because they are treated with something less toxic than 'normal' decking? And will that matter? Or will nasty chemicals leach out into the sand, which your offspring and their friends might eat?
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • There are a few plans here http://the3house.com/plans/pages/all_photo_S1.htm

Also check what your wood has been treated with, some decking can be treated with Arsnic. if it's untreated you will need to treat it to make it waterproof as sand holds water and the wood will get damp.

  • Thanks, some helpful stuff here - especially the last plans link.

The wood I've got has been Tan-E Preservative treated so is about as child safe as you're going to get with preserved wood. Interestingly most of the pre made sandpits I looked at online don't seem to tell you what preservative they've used, so at least I know with my wood I suppose.

Now just need a cheap supplier of safe play sand!

Argos, Instore(poundstretcher) and Toymaster are the cheapest i've found, all do 4 bags for a tenner i think. or about £2.99 each

one bag was oceans for a normal sized one, and unless you have a clean swept area around, you might not be able to rescue what comes out of it. so keep a bag or 2 in reserve. :)
