Common rail - one pump delivering high pressure fuel down a common rail which services the injector on each cylinder.
Polo system - Pumpe duse (PD) - each injector has it's own high pressure pump.
I personally like PD engines, but VW,Audi etc are moving over to common rail for all their diesels due to new emissions regulations.0 -
I'm no expert but I'm led to believe the peugeot diesels are some of the best diesel engines around - I know petrolheads will come on here and correct me - fine just giving you my experience - I've a 12 year old 106 diesel still going strong passed its MOT 2 months ago, and a 4 year old 307, good MPG the only thing I will say is I'm less impressed with the build quality of the newer Peugeot cars - had major issues on the 307 build wise - seat belts, door handles etc but engine wise pretty much fine0

Personally i don't know the difference - but I know that Fords are using the Peugeot engine in the new Focuses. Again an emission thing, but have heard its a good engine.

cant understand why the polo would me moving over to common rail engines for the emmisions issue
as they now do a tdi bluemotion engine which has such low emmisons that you get free road tax??????0 -
Common rail is more fuel efficient and pumps out less soot basically.
Ford and Peugeot design and build diesel engines together, so sharing design and manufacture from the smallest to the very biggest diesels.0 -

The bluemotion uses the 3 cylinder 1.4 diesel. VAG 4 cylinder diesels are moving from PD to common rail. The venerable 1.9TDi will probably disappear over the next 2-3 years to be replaced by the 2.0TDi with a common rail fuel system.
I drove a Pug 207 1.6 HDi for a week on holiday in Portugal. Whilst it worked it wasnt as punchy as the PD engines and at max Portuguese motorway speed of 75 mph was very noisy. I chose to drive at a max of 65 to reduce the noise. Fuel economy was good though at over 50 mpg.0
