Not that lucky, the insurance was nearly £2000!

I guess they are taking a stand against having 17 year olds as named drivers.

It didn't even get cheaper when he reached 18 either as I tried again.

We did a few back of an envelope type calculations and it is *almost* cheaper to buy him his own car a few years older than mine and have him as the only driver on that...

Was the increase because she passed or was it because she took over as main driver of the car being insured? I suspect the latter.

If she is main driver and isnt disclosed as main driver but parent is then this is known as fronting and is insurance fraud. It may keep the premiums down but usually results in claim being rejected. Prosecution can then follow for not being insured and potentially fraud depending on the severity of the accident.

quinn load policies when provisional drivers pass - the company i work for get a lot of business due to this

When I was 17 my Dad asked his insurance company how much it was to add me as a named driver and they wanted £25! Obviously some kind of mistake but my Dad was quick to accept it.

Pound That depends whether it was whilst you were a learner, or when you had a full licence. As has previously been stated, the additional risk from a provisional driver on the insurance isn't that great as they are constantly supervised by an experienced driver.

It was when I had a provisional license, I haven't heard of anyone else getting insurance that cheap for an additional driver with provisional license.

IIRC the £25 got me the best part of a year on my Dad's insurance, where soolin paid £475 for less than 6 months.
  • What about car insurance for someone who has a provisional license and has left learning to drive a bit late (I'm 34) ?

If you are learning to drive in a partner's/friend's car you must tell their insurer who may charge an additional premium. You should also tell them when you pass your test.

Ask when they are enquiring about adding you to the policy, if the company will still insure you when you have passed your test - some will some won't.

If you get your own vehicle or become the main user of another, again you must disclose this to insurers because it is a material fact - non-disclosure of material facts means that if/when the insurer finds out they are allowed to void the policy which could cause all sorts of problems going forwards.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me on a similar matter? I am 24 and learning to drive with a provisional licence that I have had for a couple of years. My dad rang up our car insurance (MoreThan) and asked for a quote, putting me as a named driver and keeping him as the main driver.

However they said they could not give us a quote, they would not insure me on my dads policy.

Obviously I dont want to pay thousands to insure myself on his car for only a couple practice sessions a month, so does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what I can do?

Forgot to add: our car is a ford mondeo if that changes matters at all? I think my dad pays about £230 for fully comp insurance at the moment.
