Patio Magic..........Works !

Lots of green slabs, decking and fences thanks to the last year being so wet.

With a dodgy back thought I'd try something chemical rather than a stiff brush and jet wash this year.

Did a bit of research on the net and Patio Magic seemed to get the best reviews.

I've applied it with a watering can and sprayer, it works superbly, truly an excellent product. Turned bright green slabs down the dark side of the house back to a clean grey in two days, now I've used it on the patio, garden furniture, drive, pots, everywhere with a hint of green. They have all come up like new, it's not the cheapest but worth it for ease of use and results.

Wilkinsons seem to have the large 5L at the best price, £15 ish.

It's one of those products that you'll find yourself saying 'wish I'd known about it years ago'

Patio magic is an algeacide and there are many of these on the market, koi pond owners will be aware of them. In a non critical life supporting environment, i.e. patio decking etc a solution of diluted bleach will achieve the same result for pennies.

The destruction of diatomous algea - an organic can be achieved with roughly 20 parts water to 1 part bleach. This has kept our decking clear of algea for years.

I used dilute bleach this week on my patio (always runs off into flower bed each year & things still grow!) That was fine, but as an experiment I tried Viakal in one bad area and it worked a treat. Viakal is more expensive than bleach but it seemed faster on the tough stuff and I didn't need a lot. Mind you, I'm a scrub with a brush merchant and it does take time.
    PS
Don't mix bleach & Viakal as they are chemical 'opposites.'

Indeed, Viakal is 10% phosphoric acid with 5% formic acid.
The former is found in fizzy cola drinks
Beach is an alkaline. Mixing the two can create a neutral substance cancelling out the useful properties of each.

would Patio Magic or other product also clean up general grey grime as well as green slime growth?

I don't think the cobbles in our yard have been cleaned in the last 150 yrs !
As they are an original feature, although rather wonky here and there, I need to find a safe product that won't damage old stones blocks.

also has anyone used Superspray for applying patio cleaners? I was considering getting one of these for car cleaning.
    thanks :)

I bought Patio Magic yesterday, and have tried it today, I'm not very impressed so far, brown rusty marks everywhere and it doesn't seem to do have done much.

I'll leave it for a couple of days and if no improvement, I'm gonna bleach it.

The May 'Which?' report on patio cleaners rates Wickes Patio & Decking Cleaner and Biotal Concentrated Algae Cleaner as Best Buys, with Algon as a Don't Buy.

    Also given favourable mention were:
    Aquaseal Acid Free
Jeyes Fluid (works well, but pongs!)
    No Nonsense Patio/Driveway Cleaner
    Wickes Patio Cleaner

Cheapest per application was the Jeyes Fluid. Biotal is claimed as organic.
Patio Magic! wasn't included as the formula had changed since testing.

I bought Patio Magic about 4 weeks ago and applied it as per instruction the day after when the weather was forecast to be dry (as per instructions). It rained a few days later but to date I have not seen any change of appearance in my patio or paths, the only thing it did do was kill some weeds on the patio.

This appears to be another useless product that claims to be green, I have yet to find any so called "green" products that actually work.
  • Patio Magic does work- it takes a few months to see the real benefits, getting rid of black algae stains on patio slabs etc. My patio is still in good shape after 2 years, compared to an area that I didn't use Patio Magic on. It takes its time to work, but it does work very well over the longer-term.
