wireless network can't login to ebay or a bank

If this has been covered before please point me in the right direction. I have had a quick look through the stickies though!
I have recently setup a wireless network and after much fiddling managed to get the internet on both puters.
The only problem now (apart form working out how to connect xbox live!) is I can't log into either ebay or 1 (of our 3) bank accounts.
Would anyone have any suggestions?
I have read about opening port 443 on the router/modem but have no idea how to do this.
The router/modem is an addon gwar3000 (wouldn't recommend it by the way!)
I have sygate firewall and use the router firewall.
It makes no difference if I switch off sygate I still can't log on!
Any help apprecieated!

Are you sure this is a wireless problem?
Try connecting you puter directly to the wirless hub via patch cable and then try again. I may well be a problem with your browers not allowing SSL sites.
As a quick fix you might want to try downloading firefox and see if you still cant get on to any secure sites.0 -
Thanks for the suggestion - I appreciate it.
I'm fairly sure it's a wireless problem as when I logged in yesterday still using our usb wired modem there were no problems at all.
It's started since I switched to the wireless network.
Also I should have mentioned I am using firefox but it doesn't work in internet explorer either.0 -

Irrelevant as you are now using a router.

Try connecting to the router using an Ethernet cable to eliminate wireless. You may need to change the MTU setting.

I'm sorry if some of what I'm saying is irrelevant. I'm very new to networking and not much of a "techie"!!
I assumed as the login worked prior to going wireless then it was a wireless problem.
By connecting the router with an ethernet cable do you mean plug an rj45 type cable into the back of the computer?
If so then this made no difference to the problem.
The mtu on the router is currently set at 1500 if thats any help to anyone!0 -

No because you are using different hardware and software to connect when using your router.

OK but that still does not make it a wireless problem.

Try reducing the MTU to 1400 and try your problem sites again. (You may need to disconnect and then re-connect to your ISP again) Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Log into the router, go to the connection settings and manually set the MTU to 1472 or, if you're on AOL, 1400.
I've seen this before where it assumes your ISP is OK with the default MTU setting of 1500 which some routers have that "usually works". What happens if the MTU is too high is that each data packet your computer sends is too large so it either gets bounced back or too fragmented. Not being able to log onto Hotmail or use some online banking sites is a good indicator. Lower the MTU and it solves it. Sometimes lowering it to the low 1450's can improve speeds as there's not as many packets need resending. 1458 is a value that works well.0 -
Problem has been solved, a big thank you to you all.
I changed the MTU to 1400 and I couldn't log into anything and Thunderbird either slowed or went kaput.
So I changed it back to 1500 and still nothing.
I reluctantly turned the router off, unplugged it and waited a few minutes.
I say reluctantly because over the course of trying to set the network up, everytime I turned the router off, things went very wrong when it was switched back on!!
Anyway, I switched it back on and I can now log into ebay and the bank and get all emails.:j:j:j
Once again thanks for all of your help. You've made a girl very happy:D

If you have correctly configured your router, turning it off should not cause any problems and it should simply reboot when powered back up again.
Have you encrypted your wireless network with a long random WPA-PSK? e.g. from here:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Yep done that!
The other day I was getting no-where with setting up the router so I did a reset and uninstalled the wireless network card and reinstalled it all and everything came right from there.
But like I said while I had it working I was reluctant to switch the router off.
Today has proved that I can now do that and things are still the same when I switch it back on.0
