    Various sizes, priced accordingly

Thanks People ;) I've found whole chickens from a local farm shop that are quite reasonably priced but think i'll pop into Lidl to see if they offer FR in my local ;)

    Many Thanks

The cheapest I have found is from a local farm shop butcher, it was £10.27. It is the only place where I live that does them.

Quite expensive, but we had a roast dinner for 3 out of it, also made chicken fried rice, a sandwhich and stock for soup. There was no waste at that price. They are tasty mind.

I think the Lidl fresh FR chickens are fairly new idea, and they do sell out

Not seen frozen FR in Lidl, but maybe it will come

My local Lidl BTW is a fairly "posh" one with efficient staff & manager, is ex Waitrose with a customer catchment area to suit, so fruit, veg, meat is always top notch, I have heard some Lidl's are lack lustre in this respect

  • I got a freerange bird from my local posh butchers for £7 did two dinners for four of us. Quite please with this. The butcher on the other side of town ( very upmarket) only sell f/r meat chicks are £3 per kg. good price I thinks.
  • I noticed Free Range labels on some chickens at Lidl (in Surrey) for the first time, last week (27 Sept). I asked the manager if he could tell me where they came from but despite ringing the Regional Manager, he couldn't get any information. The label said FREE RANGE and there was the Farm Assured Quality logo. There was the name and address of the packers 2 Sisters Group in the West Midlands to whom I sent an email asking them the source of these chickens but have so far not had a reply. Incidentally, the cost of the chickens was marginally cheaper than Sainsburys free range chickens.
I feel suspicious - I hope unfairly - but it seems to me too easy to put a label on a product and hope no-one challenges it.

that's a good point - I was so excited to see F/R chicken in Lidl I didn't actually think about that.

my local butcher has recently started selling F/R and I was surprised that he's no more expensive than supermarkets. He said that now he knows people will buy F/R he's happy to stock it. It made me realise that it's always worth asking, that way a retailer knows what the public wants.

Don't forget that it is almost always cheaper to buy a whole chicken & joint it to get breasts, quarters (drumstick & thigh) and wings, then boil up the carcass for stock :)
  • I got a fairly large free range chicken from Aldi this week (not sure on the weight) but it seemed good for £6.00.

It was very tasty and we got loads off it doing it in the slow cooker-well after I managed to squish it in  (had a few bones to pick out of the last bit in the bottom of the pot) and the stock was fab for soup the next day.
