Siteadvisor not working right in ie7

Hello folks,

I have been using the siteadvisor plugin for ie7 for quite a while now and I really like it, warning about dodgy sites etc.

However this last while the siteadvisor box has greyed out in ie7 and doesn't work anymore. I have tried reinstalling etc but after a few days goes back to greyed out. Maybe its a windows update that caused this...I don't know. Has anyone else had the same problem and any solutions?

Works fine in firefox.

thanks in advance for your kind help.

  • The 2nd option below fixed my problem.

    Try the following:
    - open Internet Explorer
    - click Tools
    - click Internet Options
    - open tab Advanced
    - in the list of options, make sure that "Allow 3rd party plugins" (or something like that) is ticked

    Else try the following:
    - open Internet Explorer
    - click Tools
    - click Manage Add-ons
    - click Enable or Disable Add-ons
    - make sure the Add-ons for SiteAdvisor are Enabled

I've been using this for a while and I love(d) it. However, I registered a while ago to be able to add comments but it won't seem to let me add any.. It just asks me to log in all the time, which I do and it 'says' I'm logged in, but I still can't leave a comment..

Having done a little research, I think it's safe to say that the most recent update to this program was a backward step, and although I'll still continue to use it, I'll be a little wary. It seems that users can't leave comments.. so how can McAfee build up reputation of sites..? They can't do them all themselves!
Of course, there were always spammers leaving pointless and harmful comments, but at least you could read all the comments and make your own mind up (the way they're written tells a lot!). That's going to diminish if McAfee don't fix it soon.

If I've got it wrong, I'd be happy to hear it, since I really liked this program.

I've just tried it in ie - don't normally use ie - and I'm able to log in and leave comments.. there's no obvious available update for the add-on in Firefox, but now I know it's my browser, I'll see if I can fix it.. I've seen others comment about not being able to leave comments though, so I suspect McAfee either doesn't support Firefox as much as ie, or there's just something else wrong with the add-on....

EDIT: Looks like I can leave comments in ie, but just tried to leave one and it said I wasn't authorized or something... Also found a couple of 'green' sites that clearly don't reflect the (reputable) user comments. Time to move on. Now if only I could remember a similar app. I was using for a while... <ponders> came with one of my free security/anti-badware programs/scanners......

I remembered the other one I used: Web Security Guard by SpywareTerminator.
Having done some research, I'm not sure about this one either. It loads it's 'Crawler' toolbar, and I never like progs. that do that: although I think you might be able to opt-out of having the toolbar, and I believe you can certainly disable it anyway. Still.. I don't think I'd be any happier with that than with S.A., so that one can go on the back burner...

I've just installed 'WoT' (Web of Trust) for Firefox. It also gives nice little coloured symbols in search results (little things please little minds :p ), so I'll see how I get on with it..

    :)
